How to Record Gameplay with OBS Studio (Step-by-Step) 🎥🎮

OBS Studio is one of the best free and open-source game recorders for PC. Follow these steps to set up and record high-quality gameplay using OBS Studio.


1️⃣ Download & Install OBS Studio

  1. Click the Windows button and download OBS Studio.
  2. Install OBS Studio by following the setup instructions.
  3. Open OBS Studio after installation.

2️⃣ Set Up OBS for Game Recording

1. Configure Basic Settings

  • Go to File → Settings → General
  • You can change the language and theme (optional).

2. Adjust Output Settings for Recording

  • Go to Settings → Output
  • Change Output Mode to Advanced
  • Under the Recording tab:
    • Recording Format: MP4 or MKV (MP4 is more compatible)
    • Encoder: NVENC (for NVIDIA GPU) or x264 (for CPU recording)
    • Bitrate: 10,000 - 15,000 kbps (for 1080p 60FPS)
    • Audio Bitrate: 320 kbps for high-quality sound

3️⃣ Add Your Game as a Source

  1. In the Sources section, click the + button.
  2. Select Game Capture for fullscreen games.
    • Choose Capture Specific Window and select your game.
    • If the game doesn’t show, select Capture Any Fullscreen Application.
  3. For windowed games, use Window Capture instead.
  4. Click OK to add the source.

4️⃣ Set Up Audio 🎙️

  1. Go to Settings → Audio
  2. Under Desktop Audio, select your system audio device.
  3. Under Mic/Auxiliary Audio, select your microphone (if you want commentary).
  4. Click OK.

5️⃣ Adjust Recording Quality (Optional)

  • Go to Settings → Video
  • Base (Canvas) Resolution: 1920x1080
  • Output (Scaled) Resolution: 1920x1080 (or lower for better performance)
  • FPS: 60 FPS for smooth recording (or 30 FPS for lower-end PCs)

6️⃣ Start Recording! 🎬

  • Click Start Recording in OBS.
  • Play your game, and OBS will record in the background.
  • When done, click Stop Recording.
  • Your video will be saved in Videos folder (default location).

7️⃣ Extra Tips for Better Performance

Use NVENC encoder if you have an NVIDIA GPU for smooth recording.
Lower the bitrate if your video lags.
Disable Preview (Right-click on the preview and select "Disable Preview") to reduce CPU usage.
Use hotkeys (Settings → Hotkeys) to start/stop recording quickly.
